Smarthome's new LampLinc module for incandescent plug-in lighting, supports both Insteon and X10 for the ultimate in flexibility. You can add it to your existing X10 installation and migrate to Insteon when you're ready.
Support for 2 way communication means that the module will respond to status requests from an intelligent controller. It stores it's address and state in non volatile memory, so in the event of a power failure, it will remember the address and also return to the last state (on/off) when the power went off. Very slick.
The Lamplinc 2456D3 supports lighting scenes, making it easy to have multiple lights go to a the scene's preset on/off/brightness state with a single button press or command. It also supports preset dims so it can go to a pre-determined light level with one command without having to go full on them dim. It also fades on / fades off for a better effect and to extend bulb life.
Insteon transmits its signal faster than X10 and is a redundant protocol, in that every receiver confirms when it receives and processes a command from the transmitter. And since each receiver is also a repeater, the more switches you have in the house, the more reliable the system becomes.
Each Insteon installation should start with a pair of Signalinc RF 2443's.
