Battery powered smoke detectors are inexpensive and easy to install anywhere. There's really no excuse not to have them on each floor and near your sleeping areas at minimum. In fact in many places it's the law! Test your smoke detector at least once per year. If you replace an aging smoke detector you should replace all smoke detectors in your house at the same time.
