HOW TO DETECT DUSK/DAWN FOR AUTOMATION EVENTS

Most people starting a home automation system will want to trigger events or turn lights off and on based on sunrise/sunset or lighting conditions.  While dawn/dusk can be calculated based on solar timetables, this isn't always on-the-mark because a stormy/overcast evening will darken more quickly, and daylight savings changes or miscalculations can lead to errors.
Light Sensor
For Hard Wired dawn/dusk tracking we recommend the EZEYE light sensor.  It provides both a digital (on/off) output and an analog (voltage) representation of the current lighting condition.  The EZEYE has an adjustable threshold by way of a potentiometer on the back side - simply adjust it to the light level needed and the digital output will indicate light or dark.  The EZEYE Ambient Light Sensor can be added to most automation controllers or IO devices,  including the Elk M1 Gold, EZIO2X4 or EZIO8SA.

For Insteon automation systems, the 2420M motion detector also has a light detector built-in that can be used for dawn/dusk and occupancy programs.

For ZWave, the Homeseer HSM100 also has a built in light sensor for occupancy and dawn/dusk sensing.
